Admission and Discharge Criteria in Residential Aged Care:

Westmont Aged Care Services is committed to providing high-quality care tailored to meet the evolving needs of our residents. Our admission and discharge decisions are guided by our ability to ensure that we can continue to deliver appropriate care for each resident as their needs change over time.

The Director of Care and Clinical Services is responsible for reviewing each resident's individual care requirements. This review is conducted in consultation with relevant health professionals, considering assessments and reports provided by these experts. In some cases, additional professional advice or assessments may be sought to ensure the most accurate evaluation.

These factors are considered as part of the assessment process:

  • Needs of existing residents
  • Staffing levels
  • Staff skills
  • Building layout
  • Specific care needs of the prospective resident
  • Clinical nursing skills and/or judgment that may be required to meet prospective resident care needs.
  • Availability and accessibility to allied health services
  • Behaviors of concern – aggression, screaming, shouting/inappropriate sexual behaviors/psycho geriatric needs

How much does it cost?

Fees and charges are those prescribed by the Department of Health. An assets and income assets will determine the initial entry fee and the level of ongoing fees applicable to residents. Further information can be obtained by calling our reception on 02 6043 9999 or by or visiting our fees schedule.

Residents are required to complete a Direct Debit Authority form to ensure automatic payment of fees. A detailed statement will be provided, preferably via email; however, postal delivery is available upon request.

All residents, whether you are entering on a permanent basis or just having a short stay, must provide us with an up-to-date aged care assessment or ACAS. If you do not have one you can arrange one by contacting My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

Residents are entitled to a maximum of 63 days of respite care within the financial year, which includes stays across multiple facilities. At Westmont, we recommend a minimum stay of 14 days to ensure continuity of care and optimal benefit to the resident.

Each resident enjoys the comfort and privacy of their own room, which includes an en suite bathroom, television, refrigerator, call bell system and 24-hour-care. We ask that residents bring only their personal clothing upon admission. To help prevent items from being misplaced during laundering, we strongly recommend all clothing be clearly labelled prior to arrival. For residents in permanent care, we can arrange for a newspaper to be delivered daily, with the associated cost added to your monthly account. Residents receiving respite care will need to organise newspaper deliveries independently or through their representative. Hairdressing services are available on-site and are charged directly to the resident. Westmont also offers a welcoming coffee shop, open daily for residents, staff, and visitors to enjoy. Additionally, the Homestead Kiosk, operated by our dedicated volunteers, is open twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays, with announcements made over the public address system when it is open. Meals are served in our communal dining areas; however, should you prefer, meals can be delivered to your room for your convenience.

Yes, you can, although transport to and from must be arranged by the resident or their representative or alternatively we can arrange for one of our friendly Community Care staff to assist you (fees apply).

Residents receive high-quality care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each resident is provided with a personal alert device to wear at all times, enabling them to request assistance whenever needed. In the event of a medical emergency or if hospital care is required, arrangements will be made for transfer, and your nominated representative or family member will be promptly notified. Please note that not all general practitioners (GPs) visit our facility. While we are happy to contact your preferred doctor on your behalf, we cannot guarantee they will be available to attend. We recommend that you discuss this with your doctor in advance to confirm their availability for facility visits.

Our wonderful activities staff have a range of activities available for you, bingo, storytelling, gentle exercise, bowls, crosswords, arts and crafts, bus trips and much more.

We encourage residents to continue relationships and friendships throughout their stay with us. If you require private time and space this can be arranged by offering you a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign for your use. We recommend all visitors ring prior to their planned visit to ensure rules regarding visitation have not changed, for example Covid-19 changed the visiting rules very quickly. Residents can also decline any visits if they do not feel up to them.

Visiting hours are 9-5 on Weekdays and 10-4 on Weekends/Public Holidays.

We strongly recommend if you haven’t done so already to contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 and they can help you with the steps. We can also provide you with a tour of our facility and an application form as a preliminary measure. Note: all residents entering residential aged care seeking either temporary or permanent care must be accessed by a member of the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS) arranged through My Aged Care.

Admissions are scheduled strictly between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM to ensure that our staff are available to efficiently complete the necessary administrative processes. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to these hours.

Upon admission, you will be asked to complete a series of questions with one of our qualified registered nurses. The duration of this process will vary depending on the individual. For returning residents, the admission process is expedited. However, for those who are new to our facility, we recommend allowing approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete the administrative paperwork. Please note, this time frame does not include settling in your loved one, unpacking personal belongings, or similar tasks.

To help streamline the process, we encourage you to complete the pre-admission checklist prior to your arrival, which will facilitate a more efficient admission.

Admissions are strictly between 10 am and 12 pm, this is so we have staff available to complete the administration part of the admission process.

This can be broken down into two parts, the ‘must haves' and the ‘things to consider’;
“The must have”

  • Pre-admission checklist – (included in admission pack**)
  • Application Form – (included in admission pack**)
  • Direct Debit Form – (included in admission pack**)

  • Ensure all clothing is clearly labelled to prevent clothing from being misplaced
  • No woolen items as our laundry processes are not equipped.
  • Due to safety concerns, electrical equipment coming into residential aged care must be tested and tagged prior to use. Admin staff are able to provide you with a kettle until such time that you have your own tested and tagged.
  • Newspapers: for permanent residents this can be arranged for you and the cost debited to your Westmont account. For respite residents this must be arranged by yourselves.
  • Telephone: can be organised for you (fees apply – approx. $1.40 per day)
  • Hairdressing Services: can be organised. Permanent residents can have the cost added to their account, for respite or transitional care residents, payment must be made directly to the hairdresser.

To ensure the safety and well-being of our residents, we recommend keeping cash on hand to a minimum. For permanent residents, our administrative team can provide a small amount of cash, which you can sign for, and it will then be added to your account. Residents receiving respite care are responsible for managing their own cash. For your convenience, we have a kiosk open twice a week, as well as a coffee shop that operates daily. Each resident’s room is equipped with a secure cupboard that can be locked, providing a safe space for personal items.

Whilst residing in residential aged care pets are not allowed however, family members are welcome to bring in a pet to visit as long as it is restrained or contained and does not impede on other residents.
